Ebola Enlightenment

A terrible scam is being perpetrated on us, and I’m not sure if it is being done deliberately by governments, bleeding hearts, the airlines industry, or evil/stupid people that somehow have obtained high positions in the media. Simply put, we may experience an unstoppable global pandemic. I always thought this might happen, resulting in a vast reduction of the human population. Here are the ‘facts’:

“Five Ebola subtypes have been identified: Zaire ebolavirus (ZEBOV), which was first identified in 1976 and is the most virulent; Sudan ebolavirus, (SEBOV); Ivory Coast ebolavirus (ICEBOV); Ebola-Reston (REBOV), and Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BEBOV) . Reston was isolated from cynomolgus monkeys from the Philippines in 1989 and is less pathogenic in non-human primates. It was thought to be the only subtype that does not cause infection in humans until 2009, when it was strongly speculated to have been transferred from pigs to humans. Bundibugyo was discovered in 2008, and has been found to be most closely related to the ICEBOV strain.

MODE OF TRANSMISSION: In an outbreak, it is hypothesized that the first patient becomes infected as a result of contact with an infected animal. Person-to-person transmission occurs via close personal contact with an infected individual or their body fluids during the late stages of infection or after death. Nosocomial infections can occur through contact with infected body fluids due to the reuse of unsterilized syringes, needles, or other medical equipment contaminated with these fluids. Humans may be infected by handling sick or dead non-human primates and are also at risk when handling the bodies of deceased humans in preparation for funerals, suggesting possible transmission through aerosol droplets. In the laboratory, infection through small-particle aerosols has been demonstrated in primates, and airborne spread among humans is strongly suspected, although it has not yet been conclusively demonstrated. The importance of this route of transmission is not clear. Poor hygienic conditions can aid the spread of the virus.

INCUBATION PERIOD: Two to 21 days, more often 4 – 9 days

Source of the foregoing:

  http://www.msdsonline.com/resources/msds-resources/free-safety-data-sheet-index/ebola-virus.aspx

Ebola-Reston appeared in a primate research facility in Virginia, where it may have been transmitted from monkey to monkey through the air. While all Ebola virus species have displayed the ability to be spread through airborne particles (aerosols) under research conditions, this type of spread has not been documented among humans in a real-world setting, such as a hospital or household.

While most viruses die quickly outside of a host, they persist long enough to be infectious on such things as airliner seats, seatback table trays, etc.  An infected person with no symptoms can get through airport screening; potentially infecting everyone on board, and everything they touch before and after the flight; in and out of the arrival terminals.

Yet, the aircraft that carry these modern ‘Typhoid Mary’ sick people are still flying around Africa, and elsewhere without being thoroughly disinfected. The world news organizations and government health agencies have said nothing about this, probably to avoid creating a panic. What should have been done was to destroy the aircraft by fire as soon as the problem surfaced, and all people potentially exposed both in the airplanes, and the associated air terminals quarantined for at least a month.

Obviously, it is too late now. It could wind up being far worse than the Black Plague of the Middle Ages or the Influenza  pandemic of 1918.

This Time Bomb is about to go off

The news has lately headlined the exposure of Mammoth bones in the melting tundra in the Arctic and Siberia, but little has been said about the sinister time bomb buried there. It is something I alluded to in a post in my old Opera blog.

There are tremendous quantities of greenhouse gasses (the result of the decomposition of organics) trapped in ice-like structures in the cold northern mud and at the bottom of the seas. These ices (Clathrates), contain 3,000 times as much methane as is in the atmosphere, and methane is more than 20 times as strong a greenhouse gas as carbon dioxide.

As I forecast, this temperature increase has started the release of this noxious gas into the atmosphere, and it will accelerate abruptly with a very small incremental rise in global temps. Now, there is 400 gigatons of methane locked in the frozen arctic tundra, and once this chain reaction starts, it will all be released rapidly.

When this occurs, it will result in runaway global warming. It has happened in the past, and the results were dramatic. The latest excursion occurred about 55 million years ago during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), when methane releases caused rapid warming and massive die-offs, disrupting the climate for more than 100,000 years.

And, 251 million years ago, at the end of the Permian period, a series of methane releases came close to wiping out all life on Earth. At that time, almost ninety-four percent of the marine species present in the fossil record disappeared suddenly as oxygen levels plummeted in a chemical reaction, and air temperature rose dramatically.

Over the ensuing 500,000 years, a few species struggled to re-establish themselves and diversify once again, but it took 20 million to 30 million years for even rudimentary coral reefs and forests to arise. In some areas, it took more than 100 million years for ecosystems to reach their former healthy diversity.

Even without the effect of Solar output variations, Cosmic rays, and so forth, if we continue with technologically enhanced consumerism and the industrialization of third-world countries, we are doomed for sure. At present, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, burning fossil fuels releases more than 150 times the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by volcanoes – the equivalent of nearly 17,000 additional volcanoes the size of Hawaii’s Kilauea.

It seems that to move forward, we must go back. But, not by the way the savages in the Middle East are attempting. In the USA, we may be overwhelmed by the sudden mass migration of 13 million Californians as the state runs out of water in the near future (less than five years). The surface water is vanishing, and the underground aquifers in the state have been pumped almost dry. This disaster may occupy all of the citizens in the USA. If we are attacked by outside forces, our first response may be to launch Neutron bombs, and ask questions later.

Assuming it’s not too late, if we have the will, we can revert quickly to a pre-industrial type society, and at the same time apply our technological prowess to environmental remediation, population reduction, and constructing habitats beyond the Earth. We really don’t have any choice in the matter, and we had better start now. This means downgrading the pursuit of ‘Clean Energy’, fuel-efficient automobiles, universal health-care, aid to the starving masses, and other trivia, and focus on what really matters.

From the Outernet website:

“Right now, only 40% of humanity can connect to the Internet. Even less than that have access to truly free, uncensored Internet. What this represents is an enormous gap in access to information. While the Internet is an amazing communication tool, it is also the largest library ever constructed. It grants access to anything from books, videos, courseware, news, and weather, to open source farm equipment or instructions on how to treat infection or prevent HIV from spreading. Imagine if everyone could have that information for free?

On August 11, 2014, Outernet will make that library available from space for free for the first time. Help us tell the world. The most important information from humanity will be broadcast from space to everyone for free to create a democratically curated digital library for the entire planet.

Blogsite: http://blog.outernet.is/  https://twitter.com/OuternetForAll

Imagine if everyone had any information they wanted – what would that world look like? What new inventions would be created or diseases cured? What would people read about if their governments no longer deprived them of their right to free information? Soon, we won’t have to imagine.  You can help. Spread the word through your social network.”

Regarding connectivity: At present, the Outernet literature states that the network can be accessed via a low-cost Raspberry Pi processor box or with a low-cost USB module for laptops and PCs that are running Linux. In fact, I talked to the engineers today and specifically asked about Smartphones. They said, “Any wifi enabled device will be able to interact with an Outernet receiver. These receivers can be DIY, 3rd party hardware, or something that we sell directly. Essentially, a smartphone would just connect to the Outernet hotspot and view the content that is stored on the receiver.”

Happy Birthday, Utah!

Today is a big deal in Utah. We celebrate the arrival of pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley; a very hostile and foreboding place that is part of the Great American Desert. In the dead of winter, the pioneers fought their way west across 1200 miles of wilderness and hostile Native Americans, carrying their worldly possessions on their backs, in carts pulled by hand, and Conestoga-style covered wagons pulled by oxen that suffered as much or more than the pilgrims. When they arrived after a lethal crossing of the Wasatch Mountains, this is what they saw:

The first home that I owned was located in this canyon, naturally named Emigration Canyon. In the distance can be seen the Great Salt Lake. My family’s history in the region dates about decade later than this epic journey. My wife’s great grandfather was B.H. Roberts, one of the founders of the Mormon Church. Here is an early photo of him and books that were written about him:

On my side of the family, the Cox clan came from England and became mountain men and early conservationists. My grandfather, George Cox, was one of the first game wardens, built many of the fish hatcheries in Utah, and was relentless in tracking down poachers and others who did not respect the wilderness and beauty of the American West.

My father was as tough as they come. He trapped Beaver and Muskrats, was a game warden, both for the State of Utah and the Federal Government; and he created habitat for wildlife and migratory birds throughout Utah, Wyoming, and Canada. Here is a photo that my brother took of him about 100 kilometers from the nearest road, and far from running water:

I am on the left and my father is next to me. He was in his fifties when this was taken, and we were among the first to descend into the Maze; a Slickrock wilderness that is now a part of the Canyonlands National Park.  My dad also created many of the hiking trails in Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks, chased and caught poachers in the State of Texas, and taught me to be a man. Here is another photo of him at my age, far from civilization in Utah’s Colorado Plateau:

I guess I am telling you all of this because my family has done much to make Utah and the American West a sacred place. We are an inseparable part of the wild west since its inception, and my family continues the tradition. My younger brother, Paul is a world-famous Ethnobotanist, a winner of the prestigious Goldman prize for environmental conservation, and got his doctorate at Harvard University. His daughter Mary, was recently selected to be a full professor at Oxford University in the U.K. She is one of the first American women to receive this prestigious appointment.

Years ago, Hollywood made a movie loosely based on my brother’s research and the work of his mentor, Dr, Richard Schultes, that starred Sean Connery, called, ‘The Medicine Man’.  Paul created the Seacology Foundation, and now has his own research laboratory in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he and his scientific team are advancing towards a cure for ALS, Altzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Here is a video about the Seacology Foundation:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yxLnac6Wv4

The point of my post here is not to brag about my family, but to point out that simple people with little wealth can make a difference in the reality we all share. To build, rather than destroy, is the work of God as well as man, and our view of terrorism is that it is evil, destructive, and only serves its practitioners. All of humanity needs to look closely at what we have done and are doing. Please help us save the world……and, again, Happy Birthday, Utah!!!

Mental health issues and the Ukrainian conflict

Have you noticed how many of the participants in the drama unfolding in the Ukraine are suffering from mental illness? Have you noticed how this malady is spreading to the press corps and government officials of the lie, cheat, and steal parties on both sides (or all sides as the case may be). Have you noticed how the low-lifes of the Internet everywhere are coming out in droves to express bizarre theories and accusations to stir up the pot?

Most of this is driven by ingrained fear and loathing; a result of subtle and not-so-subtle programming by propagandists, organizations that promote some cause or another, religious institutions, and belief systems that have no basis in reality. But the whole business is being really accelerated by population pressure, and imbalances in the distribution of personal wealth, natural resources, and shrinking opportunities to improve the lot in life of people and/or the countries in which they reside.

In North America, when the Native Americans occupied the country, several hundred languages were spoken, and the tribes evolved a sign language based on gestures to communicate. When they wanted to take a break from killing each other over territorial disputes, women, and hunting grounds, they would sit down in a ‘Pow wow” to settle the disputes and engage in trade. I think what is needed now is for the parties to the Ukrainian dispute to gather and discuss things in a Pow wow, and the means of communication limited to sign language. In this way, the ‘truth’ of things would emerge, and positions would be clearly understandable. Rants and raves would be hard to engage in. While deceit would still be possible, it would be far more difficult.

But, this still doesn’t deal with the mental health problems. General Semantics can help in this situation. Things like Identification—reacting to a new situation as if it were an old and unchanging one, would become more apparent. The Institute of General Semantics has published a single page of ‘guiding principles’ to enable the unenlightened to take advantage of its basic tenants without having an in-depth knowledge of the discipline. You can find this easy to read and understand synopsis here:   http://www.generalsemantics.org/the-general-semantics-learning-center/overview-of-general-semantics/important-terms/

The other issues of mental health are more profound and result from years of conditioning starting in earliest childhood by one’s parents and preachers. This type of damage will be hard to unravel without years of specialized therapy, including the use of presently banned psychoactive drugs such as Ayahuasca. It will be important for all involved in the debacle to realize that much of the rhetoric and bizarre behaviors of the combatants and ‘interested parties’ are a direct result of preconditioning and reflexive reactions. A big sign should be suspended over the Pow wow conference table that states, “One in three of you is irretrievably deranged, twisted, and in dire need of therapy”.

Gobsmacked

Yesterday, I celebrated my 74th circuit around our sun. That’s right, at the time of my birth, it was the fourth day of the Battle of Britain. It was the day that Mussolini successfully invaded Egypt. And, now I look at my life as a fine old wine, it was a very good year; yada, yada, yada. Well, that was yesterday; today, everything has changed. Today, I am, as my English friends say, ‘Gobsmacked’!!

Yes, dear reader, today I received in the mail a form letter from none other than my primary care physician; a very hot lady doctor from India.  To quote directly from the letter:

“To My Valued Patient:

I have been practicing medicine at xxxxx for the past few years and have valued being your primary care physician. I have made the decision to discontinue my practice and to make a lifestyle change. Thus, August 1, will be my last day at this location. Blah, blah, blah…..

Sincerely,

Kavita xxxxx, MD “

I screamed. I tore my clothes. I set my hair on fire. Then, I reconsidered. I wonder if it had anything to do with the cough test the other day during our office visit. I wonder if I should speak to her about my wife, while I can. I wonder if she has any idea what this is doing to my blood pressure. I may have to meditate so hard that I develop a Hemorrhoid.

No matter what happens, I am adrift again in the maw of the maelstrom, and I hear that awful, sucking sound that precedes the whirling descent into the bowels of the Medicare system. Fortunately, I am a Veteran, and I can always go running with my tail between my legs to a Veteran’s Administration hospital. I would never do it now, however, because our brave men and women fighting in the Middle East need all the bed space they can get.

Forlorn and depressed, I made my way into a small bar near my village, and taking a seat at the counter, ordered a double Jack Daniels. A youngish blonde was seated at a stool nearby, and she eyed me as I threw down the double shot like a Russian drinks vodka. Having already downed a few power drinks, she turned around on the stool, faced me, looked me straight in the eye and said, “Listen up, Buddy. I screw anybody, anytime, anywhere, your place, my place, in the car, front door, back door, on the ground, standing up, sitting down, naked or with clothes on, dirty, clean…, it doesn’t matter to me. I’ve been doing it ever since I got out of college and I just love it.”

Eyes now wide with interest, I responded, “No kidding. I’ve been looking for a lawyer. What firm are you with?”

I’ll close now, with one of my sick jokes:

A doctor on his morning walk noticed an old lady sitting on her front step smoking a cigar so he walked up to her and said, “I couldn’t help but notice how happy you look!  What is your secret?”

“I smoke ten cigars a day,” she said. ‘”Before I go to bed, I smoke a nice big joint. Apart from that, I drink a whole bottle of Jack Daniels whiskey every week, and eat only junk food. On weekends, I pop pills, get laid, and don’t exercise at all.”

“That is absolutely amazing! How old are you?”

“Thirty-four,” she replied.

Heart of Darkness

I tried to relax a little this morning by surfing the ‘Net, a habit that I have not developed, thank goodness, as it is a fairly unproductive frittering away of my most precious commodity: Time. However, I happened on an interesting archived website, Edge.com, and within this website, I came upon an article excerpt from the New York Times (2006) that discusses the Edge and its ‘dangerous ideas’ contributors. A sidebar response to the question ‘What is your dangerous idea?” came from a psychologist from the University of Texas who chose ‘The Evolution of Evil’ as his topic. He stated:

The dangerous idea is that all of us contain within our large brains adaptations whose functions are to commit despicable atrocities against our fellow humans — atrocities most would label evil.

The unfortunate fact is that killing has proved to be an effective solution to an array of adaptive problems in the ruthless evolutionary games of survival and reproductive competition: Preventing injury, rape, or death; protecting one’s children; eliminating a crucial antagonist; acquiring a rival’s resources; securing sexual access to a competitor’s mate; preventing an interloper from appropriating one’s own mate; and protecting vital resources needed for reproduction….

The danger comes from people who refuse to recognize that there are dark sides of human nature that cannot be wished away by attributing them to the modern ills of culture, poverty, pathology, or exposure to media violence. We are seeing the worst of these traits being expressed right now by the likes of ISIL (Sham) in Syria and now, Iraq. It is like jumping in a time machine dialed in for the 5th Century, A.D.

These events are an example of what I would call linear thinking that ignores one of the main tenants of General Semantics: Awareness of the mechanism of ‘Abstraction’. Examples: You cannot know ‘all’ there is to know about anything. Whatever something ‘is’ it most definitely ‘is not’. The map is not the territory it describes, and the word is not the object it represents. How does this apply to his ‘dangerous idea’?

Well, first of all, I’d argue that human beings can no longer be defined in terms that were formerly appropriate to ‘Man as an animal’. The behaviors described by the U. of T. researcher can be observed every day in most animals, including domesticated dogs and cats. It’s interesting to note that in the animal kingdom, killing is the last resort of conflict resolution. Posturing and aggressive displays usually serve the purpose nicely. In most cases, it works the same way for humans also, although it must be admitted that humans are one of the few creatures that can kill simply for the pleasure derived from the act. But in general, a modern description of a ‘Human Being’ must include a large amount of content that exists outside of the human body. The time-binding effect of language, literature, art and science allow the deepest thoughts and feelings of people to live beyond their brief lifespan and through the sharing of accumulated knowledge and experience to become much more that they ‘are’. It also gives us the power to not act out our aggressions, and provides a reality check for our fears and paranoia. We all recognize the ‘dark side of human nature’, have seen its effects over time, and have developed civilization and science as a means of combating it. I agree with the scientist that we cannot attribute the darker aspects of human nature to culture. It is part & parcel of our animal beginnings. But I believe that we have evolved beyond the attributes of our simple animal selves, expanding our consciousness far beyond the confines of our bodies and limited sensory apparatus.

An example of this point is the very exciting work done a few years ago at Princeton University’s Engineering Anomalies Research Program (PEAR). They proved conclusively that the human mind can cause action-at-a-distance, and action at a distance at a specific time in the future. Participants in the program directly influenced the output of random number generators, and did other amazing things, simply by thinking about them.

So, with our culture, and the continuing evolution of the human brain, I don’t think we need to concern ourselves too much about our ingrained animal past. Hopefully, the control systems we have developed will keep these tendencies in check. The litmus test of this idea will be the demise (or not) of international terrorism.

There is no rational for terroristic responses to social problems. An act of terrorism is either an admission of one’s inability to persuade civilized society with ideas, logic and reason, or is simply a cover from which to engage in more mundane criminal activities. Skeptic that I am, I have noted that the terrorist’s ‘reason’ for his terrorist activity is amorphous; a moving target. Different reasons for different situations. Conclusion: Con men and criminals with AK47s, spouting religious drivel. Disruption of society for personal aggrandizement and gain. No high moral ground can be found in any of this. But does this mean we can’t control it? Of course not. It means we need to get tougher. Kick ass and keep doing it as long as necessary. Punish the ‘dark side’ relentlessly until it only manifests itself inside mental institutions. And finally, educate and inform the population as a whole about the nature of our dark side, and our personal responsibility for containing it.
